How to lose weight fast?

Losing weight is on the minds for over half of all adults in the United States, according to a Gallup Survey!

Losing weight fast and safe!

Although NYC is considered a lean city, the big apple has its share of people who are obese or overweight.

In the city of New York, about 55% of all adults are either overweight or obese.

If you are overweight or obese in NYC, and are trying to lose pounds, here are some things to consider!

W8MD’s 3 easy steps to losing weight fast in NYC

Belviq Doctors

Weight loss step 1.

The first step for losing weight in New York City is to know whether you are overweight or obese, and calculate how many pounds do you need to lose weight to be in the normal range.

The most effective and practical way to know your weight relative to your height is the age old BMI scale or body mass index scale. Although not perfect, the BMI works for most normal body built people and gives an idea of where you stand.

Weight loss step 2.

Understand that it is not all BMI – it is also the distribution of body weight. For example, two people with the same BMI, one has very good distribution of weight, and the other has a lot of belly fat – the one with excess belly fat is at higher health risk. To know this, a very simple and practical way is to measure waist circumference.

A waist circumference of 40 inches or above for men and 35 inches and above for women is considered to increase the risks associated with belly fat. These numbers are 5 lower for Asians – Asian men have a cut of 35 inches and Asian women have a cut off of 30 inches in terms of the waist circumference.

insurance covered weight loss NYC insurance covered weight loss NYC

Another method used is waist to hip ratio – the ideal being below 1 for men and below 0.8 for women.

Weight loss step 3.

Let us say, you know your BMI is a bit high or you do have some belly fat, you may want to consider losing weight.

Before starting a weight loss program, you may want to know your weight loss options.

Understand the 5 proven measures to lose weight fast in NYC

Once you understand the above, you may want to choose a weight loss program in NYC that is right for you.

If you have health insurance and want to lose weight under careful guidance of a well trained and experienced weight loss doctor in NYC, you may want to consider the unique W8MD’s insurance physician weight loss program in Brooklyn, NY.

Things to consider before deciding on the best weight loss program for you.

Any successful, long-term weight loss program must focus on your overall health, not just on what you eat. Changing your lifestyle is not easy, but adopting healthy habits may help you manage your weight in the long run.

Effective weight-loss programs include ways to keep the weight off for good. These programs promote healthy behaviors that help you lose weight and that you can stick with every day.

Safe and effective weight-loss programs should include

a plan to keep the weight off over the long run

guidance on how to develop healthier eating and physical activity habits

ongoing feedback, monitoring, and support
slow and steady weight-loss goals—usually ½ to 2 pounds per week (though weight loss may be faster at the start of a program)

Some weight-loss programs may use very low-calorie diets (up to 800 calories per day) to promote rapid weight loss among people who have a lot of excess weight. This type of diet requires close medical supervision through frequent office visits and medical tests.

Questions to ask before deciding

Professionals working for weight-loss programs should be able to answer questions about the program’s features, safety, costs, and results. The following are sample questions you may want to ask.

  • What does the weight-loss program include?
  • Does the program offer group classes or one-on-one counseling that will help me develop healthier habits?
  • Do I have to follow a specific meal plan or keep food records?
  • Do I have to buy special meals or supplements?
  • If the program requires special foods, can I make changes based on my likes, dislikes, and food allergies (if any)?
  • Will the program help me be more physically active, follow a specific physical activity plan, or provide exercise guidelines?
  • Will the program work with my lifestyle and cultural needs? Does the program provide ways to deal with such issues as social or holiday eating, changes to work schedules, lack of motivation, and injury or illness?
  • Does the program include a plan to help me keep the weight off once I’ve lost weight?
    What are the staff credentials?
  • Who supervises the program?
  • What type of weight-control certifications, education, experience, and training do the staff have?
  • If it seems too good to be true…it probably is!
  • Do the people involved in the program get to talk with a doctor?
  • Does a doctor or other certified health professional run the program?
  • Will the program’s doctor or staff work with my health care provider if needed (for example, to address how the program may affect an existing medical issue)?
  • Is there ongoing input and follow-up from a health care provider to ensure my safety while I take part in the program?
  • How much does the program cost?
  • What is the total cost of the program?
  • Are there other costs, such as membership fees, fees for weekly visits, and payments for food, meal replacements, supplements, or other products?
  • Are there other fees for medical tests?
  • Are there fees for a follow-up program after I lose weight?
  • What results do people in the program typically have?
  • How much weight does the average person lose?
  • How long does the average person keep the weight off?
  • Do you have written information on these results?

Contrave

After approving Qsymia (Phentermine and Topiramate) and Belviq (Lorcaserin) for helping people lose weight a few years ago, FDA recently approved another weight loss medication – Contrave, a combination of the popular antidepressant and smoking cessation drug, Bupropion along with Naltrexone, a medication used in opioid addiction.

Bupropion/naltrexone is approved for obesity defined as a body mass index of 30 or more. The weight loss drug Contrave is marketed in the United States in a sustained release formulation under the name Contrave by Takeda for the drug’s developer, Orexigen Therapeutics.

Belviq Doctors

Bupropion/naltrexone is a combination of two existing FDA approved drugs, bupropion and naltrexone both of which have individually shown some evidence of effectiveness in weight loss, and the combination is expected to have a synergistic effect just like the other combination medications such as Qsymia(Phentermine and Topiramate).

How effective is Contrave?

In clinical trials, patients taking Contrave combined with diet and exercise lost more weight than patients taking a placebo and following the same diet and exercise program averaging about 5% of their body weight. This compares well with 3% body weight seen with Belviq although a bit less than the 9% seen in Qsymia.

Dosing of Cintrave

The recommended daily dose of Contrave is two (8 mg naltrexone/90 mg bupropion) tablets taken twice daily (4 tablets total – 32 mg naltrexone, 360 mg bupropion). Upon initiation, the drug will be started with a quarter-dose (or one tablet) for one week and a pill will be added to the regimen each week until the full recommended dose is reached on Week 4.

Price of Contrave

Compared to the other new weight loss medications, Belviq and Qsymia, Contrave is a bit more affordable costing about 0-$30 dollars per month depending on insurance coverage. With no insurance coverage, it only costs about $100.00 per month with a coupon.

Safety and Side Effects of Contrave

Adverse reactions to Contrave
The most common adverse reactions reported with Contrave include nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, and diarrhea.

According to Dr Prab R. Tumpati, MD – a leading weight loss physician and founder of W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers of America, Contrave is a valuable tool in fighting obesity that affects over a third of the entire population of the United States with significant morbidity and mortality contributing to 50 other medical problems.

Lose belly fat

  • Do you have excess tummy fat?
  • Are you wondering what causes belly fat?
  • Do you want to get rid of belly fat and get a flat stomach?

If you are tired of the excess fat in your gut, you are not alone. So, what truly causes you to gain weight in stomach or midriff?

Is there something unhealthy about this type of weight with excess weight in the stomach?

Studies have shown the central distribution of the weight carries a higher risk compared to the lower body – the traditional apple shaped body versus pear shaped body. The apple shaped body with upper or central distribution of weight carries a higher health risk compared to the more healthier distribution of weight with the pear shaped body with lower body weight.

Acanthosis Nigricans of the neck - a sign of insulin resistance Acanthosis Nigricans of the neck – a sign of insulin resistance

Causes of weight gain

Excess belly fat with too much fat in the abdomen and around the organs is called visceral fat. This visceral fat is a sign of insulin resistance.

How common is insulin resistance?

One in three Americans have prediabetes or metabolic syndrome and another 40% have some signs of insulin resistance although they may not have to the degree of prediabetes. Combined with prediabetes and diabetes stage, a staggering 71% of the US adult population has some degree of insulin resistance.

What are the risk factors for insulin resistance?

  • overweight or obesity
  • age 45 or older
  • a parent, brother, or sister with diabetes
  • African American, Alaska Native, American Indian, Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander American ethnicity
  • physical inactivity
  • health conditions such as high blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol levels
  • a history of gestational diabetes
  • a history of heart disease or stroke
  • polycystic ovary syndrome, also called PCOS

Insulin resistance calculator

Insulin resistance is when cells in your muscles, fat, and liver don’t respond well to insulin and can’t easily take up glucose from your blood. As a result, your pancreas makes more insulin to help glucose enter your cells. As long as your pancreas can make enough insulin to overcome your cells’ weak response to insulin, your blood glucose levels will stay in the healthy range. Excess belly fat as a result of insulin resistance leads to a cluster of medical problems called metabolic syndrome which increases health risks significantly.

Metabolic syndrome meter

Metabolic syndrome is a group of conditions that put you at risk for heart disease and diabetes. These conditions are:

  • High blood pressure
  • High blood glucose, or blood sugar, levels
  • High levels of triglycerides, a type of fat, in your blood
  • Low levels of HDL, the good cholesterol, in your blood
  • Too much fat around your waist

Waist to hip ratio

Another way to estimate your potential disease risk is to measure your waist circumference. Excessive abdominal fat may be serious because it places you at greater risk for developing obesity-related conditions, such as Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure, and coronary artery disease. Your waistline may be telling you that you have a higher risk of developing obesity-related conditions if you are:

  • A man whose waist circumference is more than 40 inches
  • A non-pregnant woman whose waist circumference is more than 35 inches

Waist circumference can be used as a screening tool but is not diagnostic of the body fatness or health of an individual. A trained healthcare provider should perform appropriate health assessments in order to evaluate an individual’s health status and risks.

Success story 1.

Carl Lost 75 Lbs with W8MD and these are some of the questions he faces!

When is the rest of you coming? – friends

I cannot believe your recent blood work – primary care doctor

Are you sure you did not have bariatric surgery? – favorite waitress at a diner

People were stopping Carl and asking him these questions after he lost a significant portion of his weight with W8MD(pronounced weight MD).

Carl is a busy and physically active contractor with his own business as a self employed Plumber. At 346 lbs, and 6’1″ with a BMI of 45, it is not particularly easy on him as a plumber! All his doctor has to say was “lose weight”. Having tried everything else, he decided to try the W8MD program in February, 2013.

W8MD Weight Loss, Sleep and MedSpa Team W8MD Weight Loss, Sleep and MedSpa Team

Here is a Video Testimonial about his amazing journey of weight loss success with W8MD Medical Weight Loss Centers Program. His own personal physician could not believe the last blood work. His HgA1c ( 3 month blood sugar control test) went from 7 to 5, his cholesterol improved significantly and he is not snoring any more.

Having lost about 75 lbs. in 3 months, he averaged about 25 lbs of weight loss per month. Although this may not be typical, this is as fast or faster than what is seen in most Bariatric surgery patients but without any surgery. Watch this amazing and inspiring weight loss success story of Carl titled “where is the rest of you!”

The best news is – his insurance covered his weight loss visits with W8MD.

Success story 2.

I have always been a large person. Many doctors have told me that I have the largest (thickest) bones they had ever seen. So, it has been difficult for me to maintain my weight within the recommended range on the AMA “charts” through the 63 years I’ve walked the earth. But, for many of the last 25 or so, my weight has been well over 300 lbs. As a result, I developed several of the so called “fat” conditions; type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and triglycerides, had both hips replaced, etc. Like many people, I had tried just about every diet and exercise program out there with varying degrees of success. But none that lasted.

Last year, my doctor told me that I was a heart attack waiting to happen, and suggested that I consider gastric bypass surgery. To my way of thinking, this was a last resort for lost causes. Not willing to admit to myself that I couldn’t do this without such a drastic solution, I went to see Dr. Tumpati at W8MD. That decision has absolutely changed my life! Since that first visit on October 1, 2017, I have lost 110 lbs. I previously took six medications per day for my “conditions”. I now take one. I buy clothes in “normal men’s” stores for the first time in decades.

Dr. Tumpati explained the science behind the human body’s process of burning fat that made it easy for me to understand what I was doing wrong. As I long as I keep following his advice, I stay healthy.

I highly recommend Dr. Tumpati and the W8MD program to anyone struggling to lose weight and improve their health! Steve S.

Success story 3.

I have now officially been a patient for two years now and have lost a total of 61 pounds! They are a great team and provide a great service. Hours are always convenient to my schedule, the Dr. always understands my concerns, listens and gives great advice! Laura is my biggest cheerleader and is always patient with me! It’s not a fast process for me but then again, this is the longest I have ever kept this much weight off! I am not at my goal weight yet but what’s the rush? I didn’t get here overnight and I won’t finish this process overnight. Give it a try! You have nothing to lose but those unwanted, extra pounds! E. Sullivan.

Success story 4.

FANTASTIC program! Truly a life changer! The first several months I lost on average 3 pounds a week. I have now lost 87 pounds in 10 months and I’m still losing! I can say it feels almost effortless, for with the elimination of most carbs plus the medication I have ZERO cravings and minimal hunger. D.M. Lost about 90 lbs* and maintaining with W8MD.

Success story 5.

I’ve been going to Dr. Tumpati at the King of Prussia location for about 9 months and have lost 150 pounds*.  I was at a point where my weight was affecting my life and health, ignoring it was no longer an option.  I wanted to lose weight safely, but effectively, yet most people said it was impossible.  It was time to hire a professional.

Dr. Tumpati and staff have been great explaining every step of the process and making sure I stay on track.  The accountability and constant encouragement have been key parts of my success, as well as the knowledge that I was following a plan that would work and had actual medical science to back it. I am not finished losing yet, but as compared to 9 months ago, I know I’m already healthier, now’s its just finishing the journey.  This path isn’t easy but if you’ve had enough of your weight being an impact on your health and life, considering getting help like Dr. Tumpati and his staff. It will make it easier. Dawn.

Medicare and by extension medicaid, exclude weight loss prescription medications. If you have a government issue insurance, you may want to say “I self pay or no insurance” if you want to take advantage of the coupon.
