Lorcaserin, marketed as Belviq, is a new weight loss medication that was FDA approved in 2012 although it was only available on the market almost a year later in June of 2013.

How is Belviq used to help with weight loss?

Belviq(Lorcaserin)  is used to help adults who are obese or who are overweight and have weight-related medical problems to lose weight and keep from gaining back that weight in addition to a diet low in calories and an exercise program.

Diet is still very important with Belviq!

Lorcaserin must be used along with a reduced calorie diet such as very low calorie diets (VLCD) or low calorie diets (LCD) and an exercise plan. Lorcaserin is in a class of medications called serotonin receptor agonists. It works by increasing feelings of fullness so that less food is eaten.

How should Lorcaserin weight loss medication be used?

Belviq or Lorcaserin comes as a 10 mg tablet to be taken two times a day by mouth.

How long to take Belviq for weight loss?

If you do not lose at least 5% of weight during the first 12 weeks of your treatment, it is not likely that you will benefit from taking lorcaserin.

How does Belviq work?

Lorcaserin will help control your weight only if you continue to take it. Do not stop taking lorcaserin without talking to your doctor.

Ask your pharmacist or doctor for a copy of the manufacturer’s information for the patient.

Please check with your plan as we have no way of knowing with so many plans. Also, we do not currently have a location in Baltimore. Thanks
